Dell Laptop Categories
Dell has manufactured and rolled out a variety of laptops, divided by series and subseries. Following are all of the parent laptop series released by Dell over the years:
- XPS
- Latitude
- Inspiron
- Vostro
- Studio
- Alienware
- G Series
- Precision
Each series have various subseries and models designed to cater to the needs of different users. You can choose the right one based on the system specs and your requirements.
Before we discuss the different laptop series and how they differentiate from one another, let us discuss how to read and understand their model numbers.
Understanding Dell Laptop Model Numbers
The Dell model numbers typically consist of a series of numbers and letters that provide information about the device’s specifications. Here’s a breakdown of what each part of the model number typically means.
- The first digit usually represents the range or series of the computer. For instance, 3 indicates an entry-level computer, 5 indicates a mid-range computer, and 7 indicates a premium computer. However, there are some exceptions to this naming scheme, such as Dell’s XPS models.
- The second digit indicates the screen size of the device. For example, 2 indicates a 12-inch screen, 3 indicates a 13-inch screen, and so on.
- The third digit refers to the generation of the processor used in the device. For example, the Latitude E 7470 is a 7th-generation laptop, with a 7 as the third digit.
- The fourth digit can vary depending on the model. For some models, it denotes the processor type (Intel or AMD), while for others it may indicate the type of device (e.g., 2 for a 2-in-1 device).
So, when you see a Dell laptop with a model number like “Inspiron 3000,” you know that it’s an entry-level computer with a screen size of around 13-14 inches. Similarly, if you see a model number like “Latitude E7470,” you know that it’s a premium laptop with a 14-inch screen and a 7th-generation processor.
Dell XPS
Short for “eXtreme Performance System”, the XPS series offers a popular line of high-end laptops and desktop computers manufactured by Dell. These devices are designed to cater to consumers who require exceptional performance for their computing needs.
The XPS series was first introduced in 1990 when Dell primarily focused on serving the corporate sector. However, over time, the XPS lineup has evolved to cater to the needs of consumers who seek top-notch performance and premium features.
The laptops from this series primarily carry powerful processors such as Intel Core i5 or i7, which provide excellent multicore performance. These are equipped with advanced technology that allows you to perform resource-intensive tasks with ease. But over all else, the unique selling point for the XPS series laptops is its bezel-less design.
Bezel is the frame you see around the screen. On an XPS device, you will see a very minimal frame around the screen. This impacts the overall size of the laptop significantly, making the XPS series more reliable, but simultaneously increasing the risk in case of a drop.
As you will learn further ahead in this article, the XPS series laptops come in different screen sizes. However, the 17-inch XPS will approximate the size of a 15-inch laptop from another manufacturer, a 15-inch XPS device would be almost equivalent to a 14-inch laptop from another manufacturer, and a 13-inch XPS laptop may be equivalent to an 11-12 inch laptop from a different manufacturer.
That being said, if you are all into looks as well as performance, then the XPS might be the better choice for you. However, there are su-series inside Dell’s XPS series laptops. Let’s understand them better.
Dell has subcategorized its line of XPS laptops further by dividing them respective to their screen sizes. This introduces the Dell XPS 13, Del XPS 15, and the Dell XPS 17 series laptops.
Dell XPS 13
The Dell XPS 13 series is a line of premium laptops designed for users who prioritize mobility. It includes the XPS 13 and the XPS 13 Plus. The XPS 13 is the smallest and most affordable laptop in the XPS family, while the XPS 13 Plus is the top-of-the-line model of the XPS 13 series and comes with major upgrades, but both have the same standard screen size of 13.3 inches.
These include extra speakers under the keyboard deck and a better camera with split RGB and IR. The laptop also features the new 12th Gen Intel Core mobile CPUs with better performance, a seamless glass touchpad with built-in haptics, capacitive function keys, and an edge-to-edge keyboard with larger keycaps.
Laptops from both categories come with a 13-inch display and are designed to be highly portable, making them ideal for students, professionals, and anyone who needs to work on the go. The XPS 13 series features a sleek design, with a lightweight chassis made from premium materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.
The laptops are known for their high-quality displays, which are available in a range of resolutions including Full HD, Quad HD, and Ultra HD. They also come with powerful processors and fast SSD storage, making them suitable for demanding tasks such as photo and video editing, programming, and gaming.
Dell XPS 15
Laptops belonging to the Dell XPS 15 series are larger since they have a bigger 15.6-inch screen size, and more powerful laptops designed to deliver extra power and screen real estate. These feature top-firing speakers that flank the keyboard, a larger touchpad, and a discrete graphics card. That said, the XPS 15 laptops are ideal for tasks such as photo and video editing, programming, and gaming.
The latest XPS 15 9520 model brings 12th Gen Intel Core H-Series CPUs, DDR5 RAM, and up to an NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti laptop GPU, making it a powerful choice for users who need extra power and screen real estate.
Executive Editor in Chief of Windows Central, Daniel Rubino called the XPS 15 “a joy to use” in his review. The XPS 15 9530, released in late-2013, was a highly regarded model that offered tough competition for the Apple MacBook Pro 15.
It featured a QHD+ IGZO display panel that offered low response times and good coverage of the sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces, making it an ideal laptop for photo and video editing on the go. The XPS 15 9530 was also the first XPS notebook to use the 37 W Intel Core i7-4700HQ Haswell processor, which offered much better performance and thermal headroom than the ULV CPUs used in the XPS 13 range.
Dell XPS 17
The Dell XPS 17 series is the latest addition to the XPS family and offers a powerful laptop experience with an enormous 17-inch display that’s perfect for content creators and designers who require a lot of screen real estate. It is the perfect choice for those who demand the best performance from a laptop that can handle intensive workloads with ease.
The series boasts the same exceptional design and machining as its smaller siblings, the XPS 13 and 15, but with added hardware options that make it one of the most powerful laptops on the market.
Under the hood, the XPS 17 packs a punch with the latest 12th Gen Intel Core CPUs, up to an NVIDIA RTX 3060 discrete laptop GPU, and DDR5 RAM, offering tremendous performance for demanding tasks such as photo and video editing, 3D rendering, and gaming.
The XPS 17’s massive display is perfect for creative professionals who require a large canvas to work on, making it an ideal choice for video editors, photographers, and graphic designers. Additionally, the laptop’s powerful hardware and large screen make it an excellent choice for gamers who want a portable gaming rig that doesn’t compromise performance.
While this series is undoubtedly expensive, it’s impressive specs and powerful hardware make it an attractive option for professionals and power users who demand the best performance from their laptops. So if you’re a content creator, designer, gamer, or power user who needs a high-performance laptop that can handle intensive tasks with ease, the Dell XPS 17 series is definitely worth considering.

Note: Up until 2015, Dell’s high-end laptop models were the 6000 series. However, that was later discontinued and replaced by the 5000 and 7000 series. This was also because Dell changed its naming convention for the Latitude laptops. Previously, Dell used an alphabetical suffix like “E,” or “X,” but now only following the naming convention we have discussed at the start of this article.

The target audience of Dell Alienware is quite specific, catering to gamers who want the absolute best performance and are willing to pay a premium for it. These gamers demand top-of-the-line graphics, sound, and processing power to get the most out of their games.
In terms of processors used, Dell Alienware has been known to use Intel and AMD processors, depending on the model and specifications. These processors are chosen for their speed, power, and ability to handle intense gaming sessions without slowing down.
What sets Dell Alienware apart from other gaming brands is its attention to detail and sleek design. The brand has become synonymous with futuristic aesthetics, neon lights, and unique shapes. Owning an Alienware computer is like owning a piece of art that also happens to be a powerful gaming machine.
Like the XPS series, the models for the Alienware series are also named after the screen sizes. The following subseries are available in the Alienware parent laptop series by Dell.
Note: Dell has divided the subseries with the alphabets “X” and “M“. The X series laptops are slimmer and more powerful than the M series, making them top-of-the-line models. The X series is also more costly and has a mechanical keyboard and a vapor chamber for cooling.
Dell Alienware X14 Series
Featuring a 14-inch screen, the X14 is one of the thinnest gaming laptops ever that is highly portable and easy to carry around. With a weight of only 4 pounds and an 80Whr battery, gamers can take it anywhere and play for long periods.
The laptop is equipped with a 12th-generation Intel processor and Nvidia RTX graphics, making it a potent gaming machine. It has a large amount of RAM and a speedy SSD in the default configuration, so users won’t have to wait for the system to load up. Additionally, the display has a high refresh rate that will please even the most discerning gamers.
If you are looking for a powerful yet portable laptop, you may not find a better option than the Dell Alienware X14 series.
Dell Alienware M15 Series
The Alienware M15 R7 is a 15.6-inch laptop that has a sturdy plastic body and a heavier profile compared to other laptops. Despite not having a flashy design, the laptop’s components are durable, making it a strong machine.
It weighs around six pounds, which may be a little heavy for some, but its impressive specifications and fantastic 360hz display compensate for its weight. The M15 R7 is also competitively priced.
Dell Alienware X16 Series
The Dell Alienware X16 was recently launched and has a 16-inch screen with a 2560 x 1600 resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. It has a 32GB RAM configuration with a Core i9 13th generation processor. Storage on the X16 reaches 4TB with a single SSD.

As the name indicates, it has a 16-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. As with all Alienware laptops, it packs a powerful punch with a dedicated graphics card.
However, the M16 weighs around 3.25 Kg, which is significantly heavier than most 16-inch laptops available today. This issue makes it slightly less convenient in terms of portability.
Dell Alienware X17 Series
As with all Alienware X series, the X17 subseries is a thin yet powerful laptop with 17.3-inch screen size. It includes the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card and a 12th-generation Intel processor.
That said, the display isn’t very special as it has an IPS display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 3ms response time. Additionally, it has a 120Hz refresh rate, which is better than the everyday-use 60Hz display, but still lower than what the more recent Alienware series offers.
Additionally, any laptop from the Dell Alienware X17 series will set you back at least $2,200, so this series isn’t going to be cheap.
Dell Alienware M17 Series
The Alienware M17 R5 is a high-end gaming laptop that offers impressive performance with its eight-core Ryzen 9 6900HX processor and Radeon 6850M XT GPU. The 17.3 inch 4K display adds to the immersive gaming experience. It is a bit heavy at over seven pounds, but the powerful specs make up for it.
If you mostly use your laptop at your desk, this is an ideal choice for gamers. Plus, it comes at a very competitive price.
Dell Alienware M18 Series
The M18 is the biggest and badest addition to the Alienware line to date. It has recently been launched and is the first of its size in the Alienware category. The M18 has an 18-inch display and packs an RTX 4090 graphics card, supports 32 GB memory, and a 13th-gen Core i9 Intel processor.
The M18 is currently being offered with two screen configurations:
- 2560 x 1600 with a 165Hz refresh rate
- 1920 x 1200 with a 480Hz refresh rate
On top of the high-end tech, it also includes an improved 6-speaker setup, making it the real deal. Of course, with all this hardware, the newly-launched M18 laptops can break the bank but are totally worth it.
